ALS, 1863 September 8 : Amesbury, [MA], to Mrs. E.D.E.N. Southworth.

Whittier writes here to a popular novelist, Mrs. Southworth, whom he acknowledges as the source for his famous Civil War poem. He mentions that he has "just written out a little ballad B̀arbara Frietchie, ̀which will appear in the next Atlantic ..."
